Uganda is home to 460+ mountain gorillas — about 50% of the world’s population. You can only see them in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwest Uganda.

THE BASICS: WHAT IS GORILLA TREKKING?

Definition: A guided hike into rainforest to find a habituated mountain gorilla family, then spend 1 hour observing them from 7 meters / 23 feet away.
What’s “Habituated”?These gorilla families have spent 2-4 years getting used to humans. They ignore you, so you can watch natural behavior: feeding, grooming, babies playing, silverback displays.
Age Limit: 15+ years only. No babies, no exceptions. UWA rangers enforce this strictly.
Group Size: Max 8 people per gorilla family per day.
Time: 2-8 hours hiking + 1 hour with gorillas = 4-10 hours totalWHERE TO TREK: THE 2 PARKS

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK | UNESCO World Heritage Site

Location: Southwest Uganda, bordering Rwanda + DRC. 8-9hrs drive or 1hr flight + 1.5hr drive from Entebbe/Kampala.
Gorilla Families: 17 habituated families across 4 sectors = 136 permits/day
Altitude: 1,190m – 2,607m. Steep, muddy, dense rainforest.
Success Rate: 99%. Trackers radio ahead daily.

Rule: 90% of travelers trek Bwindi. Book Rushaga if you need permits last-minute. Book Buhoma if you want easiest trek.

MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK | Virunga Volcanoes

Location: Far southwest corner, at foot of 3 volcanoes. 2hrs from Bwindi.
Gorilla Families: Only 1 – the Nyakagezi group. They move between Uganda, Rwanda, Congo.
Success Rate: 90-95% vs Bwindi’s 99%.
Bonus: Only place in Uganda for Golden Monkey trekking $60. Same day possible.

How to Book:

1. Pay $800 to Uganda Wildlife Authority UWA or licensed operator.
2. Permits are non-refundable if cancelled <90 days.
3. Book 6-12 months ahead for June-August + December-January.
4. Low Season Mar-May + Oct-Nov: Easier to get, 10-15% lodge discounts.

Pro Tip: Your operator should send you a scanned permit with your name + date + sector. No permit = no trekking.

HOW HARD IS IT? DIFFICULTY + FITNESS

Fitness Level: Moderate
You hike at 1,500m-2,600m altitude on slippery, muddy, root-covered trails. Could be 45min or 6hrs to find gorillas.

Who Manages It?
1. Age 60+: Yes, if you walk 5km normally. Most seniors do it.
2. Not Fit: Hire a porter $20. They carry your bag, give you a stick, push/pull you. Worth it.
3. Bad Knees: Request Buhoma sector + a “short family” like Mubare at briefing.

What Makes it Hard: Steep hills, stinging nettles, humidity, mud in rainy season.
What Makes it Easy: Porters, walking sticks provided, guides set pace for slowest person.

Medical: If you’re sick with flu/covid, you cannot trek. You can infect gorillas. Masks are mandatory if you have a cold.

WHAT HAPPENS ON TREK DAY – HOUR BY HOUR

5:30 AM: Breakfast at lodge. Pack lunch + 2L water.
6:30 AM: Drive to Park HQ for registration + briefing. Coffee, toilets, final rules.
7:00 AM: Split into groups of 8. Assigned a gorilla family based on fitness.
7:30 AM: Enter forest. Hike 2-8hrs. Trackers are ahead with radios.
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Find gorillas. You get exactly 1 hour. Sit, watch, take photos, no flash.
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Hike back to HQ. Get your certificate. Return to lodge.

Rules in Forest: No eating, no touching, 7m distance, whisper only, no flash, cover mouth if coughing.

WHAT TO PACK | GORILLA TREKKING CHECKLIST

Clothing:
1. Waterproof hiking boots – broken in
2. Long waterproof pants + long-sleeve shirt – nettles
3. Rain jacket + rain pants – it rains anytime
4. Gardening gloves – grab vegetation without cuts
5. Gaiters or long socks – tuck pants in for ants

Gear:
1. Daypack with rain cover
2. 2L water + energy snacks 3. Camera with zoom 70-200mm, no flash
4. Walking stick – provided at HQ
5. Insect repellent + sunscreen

Leave Behind: Bright colors, plastic bottles, suitcases at lodge.
